As told from Kitty's memories

The big house was about halfway up a mountain. Cars had to be parked at the bottom of the hill and visitors had to hike up the hill. The big house had no central heat; if it did it was never used. The kitchen was the only room heated by a small ceramic heater. Going to bed was a quick run down the incredibly cold, long hallway and jumping into bed with Jonelle and Retta and trying to snuggle and warm up quickly.
There was no running water, the kitchen sink had a pump, and you washed your hair in the water from the rain barrel that was at the back, left corner of the house. The rain barrel was a few mere inches from the roof of the house, because the hill was so steep. If you went out the fence and further up the hill on a dirt path you came to the little house. At different times, different grown Trivett children, and their children, lived there, so there was usually a cousin to visit. At the foot of the hill was a country store that sold crème sickles, but you could only go to the store if an adult went with you because Big Mom was convinced that all of us would run onto the highway that was right there next to the store. NO ONE was allowed to touch Big Mom’s flowers, a real struggle for Kitty!!!

It's funny how the oddest thing will remind you of something. We were driving home from Texas and a GIANT bug hit the windshield and it reminded me of this story:
When Margie was a little girl in summer time and she was bored, she and Zo would catch june bugs and tie strings to one of the bug's legs. They would then turn the bug loose, hold on to one end of the string while the bug would fly around in circles above their heads.

When Uncle Gray was in the army, to get some extra pay, he joined the paratroopers. One day, while he was jumping out of an airplane the parachute didn't do what it was supposed to do and Uncle Gray ended up in Walter Reed hospital for quite awhile with a broken back. One of the things the nurses did for him was give him an alcohol rub on his back, which he swore eased the pain. So after he got out of the hospital, and Army, one of the things Margie did for him on a regular basis was give him an alcohol rub. One evening Kitty and Retta were in the bathroom, and Kitty noticed the alcohol and cotton balls on the back of the toilet, so she told Retta to lay down and she would give her a back rub, since it seemed like so much fun. That got boring rather quickly so Kitty poured a capful of alcohol and told Retta to drink it. Retta had SEVERAL capfuls of alcohol, and her parents noticed it when she came stumbling out of the bathroom like she had been on a three day drunk, she was rushed to the hospital and her stomach was pumped and she got to eat ice cream!!!

During the summer months Polly and Margie traded kids for a week. sometimes, Polly would have Junior, Ronnie & Robert and Margie would have Kitty, Retta and Kat. Somethimes it was the other way around. One summer Retta decided to give Kat an alcohol back rub. The cotton ball wiped all the dirt off Kat's back and Retta showed Kat the darkened cotton ball and said she had wiped Kat's tan off, that there were big white stripes all over her back. Kat started screaming and crying that Polly was going to kill her if she looked like a zebra and didn't have her whole tan.
When these Trivett children were growing up, Big Dad worked in the coal mines of WV. It was a nasty job with little pay. The miners were given credits at the company store to purchase what goods they needed. There was not always enough credits to go around for so many children. Margie and Zo used to waylay a neighbor girl, whose parents had more money, and steal the girl’s bloomers and shoes to wear to school, since they had no bloomers or shoes of their own. One day Margie would wear the shoes and Zo would wear the bloomers and the next day they would trade.
Big Dad taught the kids to count on each other, since there were so many of them, they always had allies in any altercation that occurred. One time the principal of the school spanked Margie for something she said or did and Big Dad went down to the principal, shotgun in hand, and told the principal to never touch one of his kids again. Trivetts were taught to count on each other and to never allow anyone to bully them for any reason.

Margie’s job as a child was to get up in the morning and start the fire so the house would be warm when Big Mom got up. Margie liked to take a razor to her fingernails and shave them to points and curve her fingers at Big Mom, for which she earned the nickname "Darned old devil".

When Michelle was a baby she looked just like a little cherub. She had the cutest curls and the sweetest smile and a darling little face. Looks are deceiving, though, Michelle LOVED to eat raw hamburger. Hopie had to keep her out of the kitchen when she was cooking because Michelle would steal handsful of raw hamburger and eat it. She was always dirty, too, which made Hopie nutso. Uncle John tried to reassure Hope by telling her that "No self respecting germ would come around Michelle!".

Later in life Aunt Eddie had Baby Dog. Baby Dog was the bane of Sandy’s life, she was a white chihuahua that Evelyn fed so much she looked like a little white pig that Evelyn took everywhere with her. Sandy, and her partner in crime, Kathy Baisden, painted the dog with food coloring when psychedelic was the craze and painted the dog’s toenails just to irritate the dog. But the real nemesis of Sandy’s life was Evelyn’s parrot. When Sandy finally couldn’t take the parrot any more, she threatened to cook the bird and eat it, so Evelyn called Margie and Margie gave the parrot a home.

Carol and Bob had a beautiful baby boy. When the doctor finally okayed a visit to Grandma Zo's they started packing up all the necessary gear that was needed for a trip to Grandma's. They packed the car diligently, and when they got to Zo's house they started unpacking all the stuff they would need for a visit. Zo was getting upset at getting all the baby stuff and no baby, so she finally told them to bring the baby in and forget the rest of the stuff. That is when they realized they had forgotten Scottie at home.....neatly packed up in his car seat!!!
Zo did not drive. One day Polly got a frantic phone call from Zo that Polly needed to go downtown and buy Zo a wig that was close to her hairstyle and she had to hurry. So, Polly went and bought Zo a wig. When she got to Zo's house she was surprised to see Zo bald as a cue ball. Zo explained that she had gotten mad at Uncle Dave that morning and after he left for work she shaved all her hair off. Then she decided she didn't want Dave to know she was bald and she needed a wig until her hair grew out.

Jonelle liked to pretend she was a movie star, she was always Liz Taylor. Retta, being blonde, couldn't be Debbie Reyonlds(who she wanted to be) because of the Taylor/Fisher divorce, so Retta had to be Connie Stevens.

As told from Kat's Memories:

Because it made Polly so mad, Big Mom always called her “she” or “her” like she didn’t have a name. When Big Dad came home from work, Big Mom would say “she-did this, she-did that” or “it was her and then Polly would have to stand at the mantel and eat dinner almost every evening.

A Story about Earl- Polly gave June Bug his Dad’s (who died December 2, 1960) watch and Ronnie his dad’s ring when they were older. Earl came over to see June Bug’s new GTO sports car. They started to wrestle in the front yard and June Bug took off the watch and laid it on the hood of the car. A little later, they decided to take a ride in the car with Kat on the hood, the watch was never seen again! Wrestling in the living room one time they broke Polly’s kidney shaped glass coffee table too :)

Polly would drive to Xenia, Ohio, at least once a month to visit with Aunt Margie, Uncle Gray and kids, weather permitting. Sometimes in the summer they would each drive half way and make a trade off, Robert for Kat, at Great Western Shopping center, then Margie had "the girls"and Polly "the boys". Then a week later we’d trade back, shucks! On one of those trips when I was about 6 years old I remember JuneBug and Ronnie taunted all the way there. They always thought it was funny to torture me, I was pretty gullible, (not as gullible as Retta who let Kitty talk her into drinking alcohol-hehe) well, this was pretty bad too but, anyway. I had gotten into my sack I had with me that had my toothbrush and other things I might need for the week or so and this time we were driving all the way, because mom was going to spend one night too. One of the boys said "I bet you can’t get that toothbrush in your mouth sideways" Everyone was always making fun of me talking all the time saying I had a “big mouth.” We argued a while and then I decided to prove I could! Well I did and it got stuck! My mouth was hurting so bad by the time we reached Aunt Margie’s house! I was crying because I couldn’t budge it either way and the boys were laughing their heads off! When we got there mom took me straight in and Aunt Margie had to get pliers to break the toothbrush to get it out of my mouth! Kitty Retta and Robert thought it was hilarious too! Needless to say (anyone of you that knew her) mom about beat me an inch of my life for doing it in the first place and for her having to listen to me cry in the car for probably 30 minutes! Polly said she almost drove off the road when she looked in the rearview mirror, to see what all the commotion was about, and all she could see was Kat with her lips stretched sideways from the toothbrush!
Kitty insisted that I tell this story because she is still laughing about it to this day! :)

Polly used to always say "Kat, you have more tongue than a horse has ass"! So one day Gary Dale came in when he was about 5 years old and promptly said "Kat, you have more tongue than a horses ass"! They thought that was so funny!

When Aunt Margie and Uncle Gray lived on a farm in Deleware, Ohio Retta decided (for some unknown reason) she wanted to own a horse! So she bought one. She didn't know how to ride well and every time it snowed or rained the horse would run for the barn, no matter where it was at the time! So when Kat came to visit, she wanted to ride the horse. Aunt Zo, Aunt Margie and Polly watched from the kitchen window to see how it was going. When Kat looked up at the window and waved, she wasn't paying much attention except to show off, about that time a tree branch slammed into Kat's neck and knocked her right off the horse, the horse ran for the barn. Aunt Zo, Aunt Margie and Polly laughed till they cried and peed their pants!

Gary Dale had a motorbike and brought it out to the farm one day to ride it. Aunt Polly said she wanted to ride it, Gary tried to tell her how, but she said "!I've been driving longer than you've been alive, I can drive ANYTHING"! Well she did and promptly got the gas stuck and wrecked into the ground, she didn't know where the break was!

As told from Aunt Hopie's memories

Big Mommy never would allow alcohol in the house, so Warren would hide his bottle outside the gate. One night Big Mom went out and found it she emptied the bottle and broke it. Then she watched out the window for them to go to look for it. She laughed and said that would teach them "darned old devils" for bringing that stuff to her house!

Charles lived with Carrie on WV side of the river and Molly lived on the KY side. So Uncle Charles took a boat back and forth across the river to see her all the time until, someone stole his boat called "the love boat"!

Hopie and Rich were married about 4 years and Hopie wanted him to meet Zo. Hopie stopped to see her when they went through Ohio. Nobody answered the door, she opened the door and yelled into the house. She walked in and Uncle Dave was sitting in the living room. She asked "Is Zo" here? he said "Nope,Nope" she said "Where did she go"? "She went to Eddie’s". So then Hopie asked did Uncle Dave want to meet her husband. He said "I guess so", they opened the door and Hopie started to look to introduce them and Uncle Rich was on his hands and knees smelling the grass! She figured the family would know she was married to a lunatic!

As told from Molly's memories

Charles always loved coffee and hated butter. After supper every night when Big Mom and Big Dad went into the living room to have coffee and talk the girls had to clean up the mess and do the dishes, usually Margie or Zo. Charles would want coffee so bad but, when he’d ask for it the girls would make him eat butter to have a cup. He said he ate LOTS of butter, even though he hated it!

That's all anyone has told me for now!
